Most, if not all, “toilet cleaners and disinfectants” made for home or commercial uses are based on QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS and HYDROCHLORIC ACID.
The quaternary agent is not only toxic to marine crustaceans (it is used to destroy algae in swimming pools); it is extremely toxic to humans and is slow to degrade in both river systems and sewage treatment works.
Quats (as they are called commercially), are described by their safety data sheets as a primary skin irritant and are dangerous when sprayed in eyes or on the skin. They are also non-biodegradable and therefore the majority of toilet bowl cleaners are non biodegradable.
